If you are a writer or publisher — with or without e-book publishing on the Kindle platform — Joshua’s thorough, elegantly presented book is an essential addition to that small “shelf” of e-books (or dead-tree books, if you prefer) that you keep right on your Kindle’s Home screen (or right next to your desk). You’ll learn plenty that is new and useful, including work-arounds for some of the more vexing glitches and problems with the Amazon’s largely unsupported Kindle digital text platform (DTP). This new book is a perfect complement to Graphics on the Kindle (both Kindle 1 and Kindle 2) (The “Graphics on the Kindle” Series), which is great on graphics, and my own The Complete Step-by-Step Guide To Publishing Books, Articles & Other Content for the Amazon Kindle (Creating Your Own Success Story with New Technologies) (available as a single title or, at the same price, in a 2-for-1 combo as 2 Books in 1: Complete User’s Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle 1 & Complete Step-by-Step Guide To Publishing for the Kindle), which takes a back seat to Joshua’s book on formatting and technology but will help you make sure that people can find and purchase your elegantly formatted book once it is up and live in the Kindle store.

Joshua Tallent and his book, “Kindle Formatting: The Complete Guide to Formatting Books for the Amazon Kindle” has single-handedly allowed me and my technical team to e-publish. I researched Kindle publishing for months, but did not have the courage nor knowledge on how to accomplish it until I purchased Tallent’s book. Mr. Tallent takes you step-by-step through virtually every option for formatting your e-book in order to find the one that works best for you, provides tips, techniques and stellar examples for a clean and professional e-book. If you want your book to be published on Kindle and to stand among the most professional work out there – waste no time in obtaining Tallent’s book. He is not only the most astute author on Kindle publishing, but also one of the finest technical resources who willingly and generously shares his experience with others. His name does not lie, either, he is truly the most ‘talented’ on this topic.

I’m not going to go into a long “how great it is” documentary here, but keep it short and simple – when I was struggling with publishing my books on the Kindle to sell on the Amazon store, I bought this book plus two others to help me bridge the gap: after all, the instructions from the Amazon and MOBI websites leave a lot to be desired or you wouldn’t be looking at this book to see if it is for you, would you? This book was head and shoulders better than the other offerngs I purchased.
I found the text easy enough for me to follow along with great examples so you can have your own “aha” moments and figure out how to do a particular task. My books were fairly straight-forward and this book released me from the hours of trying to find the right html code. FOr the more detailied books, say if you had tables and other items you are trying to format for the Kindle screen, there are sections for it, too.
Bottom line is this is a tremendous resource and worth every penny – that is, unless you like staying frustrated spending hours on Bing or Google searches in an effort to find out the answer!

This book is the definitive guide to Kindle formatting and publishing. If you are going to produce your own Kindle Book, buy this book and read it before you start – it will save you a tremendous amount of time later. Read Chapter 8 – Previewing and Publishing – first, especially the explanation of Digital Rights Management (DRM) on page 136 at the end of the Chapter. This chapter explains that if you want to 1) do a final check of your Kindle manuscript on your own Kindle before you publish and 2) submit it with DRM, you must use the Mobipocket Creator to create a Mobipocket ebook to submit to the Amazon DTP rather than simply submitting an html file to the Amazon DTP. If you don’t know why this is important, you will after reading the book.

I ordered this book because I was contemplating converting my stories to the Kindle format. I already have knowledge of HTML and found this book touched all the basics and a lot more. If you are into formating your own books for epublishing, and you have little or no previous knowledge of HTML, then this is a very good book to get. It looks at how to convert basic text from word, or pdf or just about anything, into HTML which can be viewed with a web browser, but with a particular emphasis on Kindle formatting. There are also references to MobiPocket, which is a good alternative to Kindle, and you can down load the software for free, allowing you to see the progress of your ebook. There are also tips on setting out the text for poetry and things like that. There is a lot of good stuff in this book, well worth getting hold of. I know, I did.
