If you have other electronic equipment (iPod, BlackBerry, Palm device, etc.) these will be incredibly handy. It's really great to leave the adaptor plugged into your car and just change the USB cord to fit your device. In a perfect world, all these devices would use a universal cord but, until that happens, these adaptors and cords make life a little bit easier.
